Udall Condemns White Supremacist Violence in Charlottesville

Statement

Date: Aug. 14, 2017
Location: Albuquerque, NM

Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall issued the following statement denouncing the hateful beliefs and acts of violence and domestic terrorism of white supremacists in Charlottesville, Va., over the weekend:

"As a proud American and U.S. Senator from New Mexico, I denounce in the strongest terms possible the anti-American white supremacists, neo-Nazis and KKK members who voice hate, bigotry and violence against others because of their race and religion. While their right to protest -- and reveal their ignorance -- is protected by our Constitution, their racist and violent goals are not; they are contrary to everything our nation stands for, and those who commit acts of terror must be brought to justice.

"We can't afford to ignore that t?he protest leaders cited President Trump's words: they were there to 'take back America.' America is not theirs to take back; it belongs to all of us, regardless of race, identity, religion, or national origin. ?It shouldn't have taken the president any time -- much less two days -- to condemn the hate-filled violence that white nationalists and Nazis stand for. His speech today was far too little and far too late.

"I offer my heartfelt condolences to the families of all of the victims of the violence over the weekend. Let's honor their memory by showing in our actions that Americans will not condone the ugly and destructive forces of racism and hatred."
