Hoyer Statement on President Trump's Pardon of Sheriff Arpaio

Statement

Date: Aug. 25, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Trump pardoned former Sheriff Joe Arpaio:

"I am outraged by President Trump's pardon of former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was convicted of criminal contempt following years of racial profiling and civil rights violations. This decision blatantly disregards rule of law and basic respect for separate branches of government, and it sends a dangerous signal to others who wish to disregard the Constitution and discriminate against individuals. It is yet another example of this Administration condoning racism and inequality, rather than the values enshrined in the Constitution."
