Rep. Huffman Introduces Energy Transparency Legislation: "Know Your Oil Act' & "Carbon Pollution Transparency Act'

In response to the slew of damaging environmental legislation being considered by the 115th Congress, Rep. Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) introduced two bills to bring new transparency to energy policy.

"Knowledge is power," said Rep. Huffman. "I believe that Americans should be given the power of the full picture of the damage caused by using dirty energy sources, as well as the environmental impact of any piece of legislation considered before Congress. That's why I'm introducing the Know Your Oil Act and the Carbon Pollution Transparency Act to close the information gap and provide full disclosure to the American public, consumers, investors, and policymakers."

Rep. Huffman's Know Your Oil Act would provide consistent and unbiased information about the greenhouse gas emissions generated by the increasingly complex global oil supply chain -- from petroleum sources ranging from the Gulf of Mexico to Alberta tar sands, to the refinery, to the gas pump. Specifically, the Know Your Oil Act would grant the Secretary of Energy the authority to collect and disseminate data on carbon, methane, and other greenhouse gas emissions from the entire oil supply chain, including extraction, transportation, and refining all the way to the retail point of sale.

Huffman also introduced today the Carbon Pollution Transparency Act to require the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) to estimate and report the projected carbon footprint of each bill considered before Congress. The Carbon Pollution Transparency Act would provide carbon emission estimates from the CBO, the neutral umpire that already provides long-term financial forecasting for the most important bills that go before Congress.

Rep. Huffman also introduced both the Know Your Oil Act and the Carbon Pollution Transparency Act in the 114th Congress.
