Nevada's National Monuments Must Remain Protected

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Kihuen spoke at a press conference organized by the Nevada Conservation League and the Center for Western Priorities on the importance of protecting Nevada's national monuments. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke will visit Nevada later this month as part of the Department's National Monument review process.

"Protecting and preserving our state's natural resources while strengthening economic opportunities and good paying jobs for Nevadans is essential. Reversing their designations puts these sites at risk and would have a detrimental effect on the state's economy and shared cultural heritage" Kihuen said. "The designations of our monuments came after years of effort by local activists, and long periods of public input. Our national monuments are tremendously important to the people of our state, and it's necessary that they remain protected from private interests."

The Center for Western Priorities' Monuments to America tour is a six-state RV road-trip highlighting national monuments across the West that are threatened by President Trump's executive order. It involves local advocates and elected officials who urge Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to protect America's national monuments.
