Rep. Kihuen Introduces Amendment to Defend Yucca Mountain Licensing Efforts

Today, Representative Ruben J. Kihuen (NV-4) introduced an amendment to eliminate funding to restart licensing efforts for the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository currently included in the Defense, Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, Legislative Branch, and Energy and Water Development National Security Appropriations Act, 2018, which is scheduled to be voted on next week. Members of the Nevada delegation, Reps. Jacky Rosen (NV-3), and Dina Titus (NV-1) also joined on as co-sponsors.

"We have been down this road before, and as I have said many times, Yucca Mountain is not a dumping ground for nuclear waste. Nuclear waste stored a Yucca Mountain will threaten the safety of Nevadans in addition to putting millions of visitors at risk. There are plenty of ways to utilize the existing infrastructure at Yucca Mountain, however, funding a dead project and stuffing a mountain with nuclear waste is not the answer."
