Rep. Kihuen to Subcommittee: "Put Yourselves in Nevada's Shoes"

Statement

Date: April 26, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Representative Ruben J. Kihuen testified at a hearing before the Environment Subcommittee of the Committee on Energy and Commerce regarding the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017. The hearing involved the controversial plan to use Yucca Mountain, which lies in Nevada's Fourth Congressional District, as a nuclear waste repository. A statement from Rep. Kihuen is below and the full testimony can be accessed here.

"If states think they can dump nuclear waste in our state without input from Nevadans, they should be ready for a fight. Today, I testified calling on members of the subcommittee to reconsider this haphazard and irresponsible project. I asked that they put themselves in Nevada's shoes -- would they support this project if it was being built in their district, near their families. Would they move forward if they knew it posed a potential threat to the well-being and livelihood of their constituents? If the answer is yes, then I'll work to find a place in their districts. If not, they should stop shoving nuclear waste down our throats."
