Rosen Co-sponsored Bill to Save Nevada Taxpayer Money Passes House

Statement

Date: June 20, 2017
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Taxes

Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03) released the following statement after the Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Simplification Act of 2017, H.R. 2315, of which Rosen is a co-sponsor, passed by voice vote on the House floor:

"Today's modern work environment is causing more and more Americans to travel across state lines for work. As a result, even one day working out of state requires employees and businesses to file a separate tax return for that state, creating a burdensome tax filing process and wasting significant hard-earned taxpayer money."

"Reducing government red tape and saving Nevada taxpayers their hard-earned money is part of why I ran for Congress. That's why I'm so excited that H.R. 2315, a bill which I co-sponsored, passed the House today. This bill will significantly reduce the burdens on businesses and their employees by ensuring individuals would only be subject to another state's taxes if they work there for more than 30 days in a calendar year. Even more important, this bill will keep Nevadans' income here in Nevada."

BACKGROUND: The Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Simplification Act amends current law to only allow the resident of a state to have part of their income taxed by another state if he or she works in that state more than 30 days in a calendar year. Currently, many employees are legally required to file an income tax return in every state they travel to for work, even if it's just for a single day. Businesses must also comply with fifty states' varying withholding requirements for their employees' travel. H.R. 2315 is bipartisan legislation that would simplify state income tax requirements for employees who work multiple days per year outside the state of their residence, including the many Nevadans who work in California, Oregon, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, and elsewhere across the country.
