Rosen Requests Federal Funding for Programs to Invest in Nevada's Economy, Correct Major Shortfalls of Trump Budget

Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03) released the following after submitting the first of several appropriations requests in response to the President's 2018 budget request:

"Programs that invest in our future like STEM education, medical research, renewable energy, and more, are crucial to the longevity of our economy," said Congresswoman Jacky Rosen. "President Trump's budget is short-sighted and fails to address the skills gap that threatens to stifle economic growth across our state. If we are going to get serious about putting Nevada on the map, then we must promote funding for programs that are forward-thinking and invest in a workforce that can compete in a constantly evolving economy. That's why I have requested robust funding for the National Science Foundation and for the Department of Energy because by investing in research and development, we can unlock Nevada's potential."

BACKGROUND: Congresswoman Rosen hsa requested robust funding for the following programs.

National Science Foundation

Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE): CISE supports computer and information science and engineering research, advanced cyberinfrastructure for all areas of science and engineering, and contributes to the education and training of computer and computational engineers at universities across the country. UNLV has 5 active CISE awards totaling $1.98 million. President Trump's Budget would slash CISE funding by $97 million, eliminating an estimated 150 computer and information science grants nationwide.

Department of Energy

Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy's Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO): AMO is the only technology development office within the federal government that is dedicated to improving the energy and material efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness of manufacturers across the industrial sector. AMO partners with academia, industry, small business like Graham Packaging and Tronox in Henderson, and other stakeholders to invest in emerging clean energy products and technology. President Trump's Budget cuts AMO funding by 64 percent.

Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability's Smart Grid Research & Development (R&D) --Smart Grid R&D develops the technologies, tools, and techniques needed to modernize the electric power grid, which is critical to addressing aging infrastructure, preventing power outages, providing reliable service to Americans, and mitigating cybersecurity risks. NV Energy's "NV Energize" project is an example of a Smart Grid Investment grant that benefits both residential and commercial consumers in Nevada. President Trump's Budget guts Smart Grid R&D funding, cutting it by 71 percent.
