Payne, Jr. Statement on Trump's Decision to Withdraw from Paris Climate Deal

Statement

Date: June 5, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) issued the following statement after President Donald Trump announced that the United States will exit the Paris climate agreement:

"President Trump continues to erode America's global leadership.

"The president's ill-advised decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement is the most horrendous and dangerous anti-environment action he has taken since the beginning of his presidency. It sends a signal that the United States will not honor its commitments to our international partners, and that we are unwilling to lead on the greatest threat of our time.

"Climate change increases extreme weather events and natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy, one of the deadliest and costliest storms in U.S. history. Pulling out of the agreement weakens American credibility, increases risks to health, economic, and national security, and gives other nations an opening to reconsider their own commitments to reducing emissions.

"President Trump should reconsider this misguided decision. The safety and environmental stability of our county is at stake."
