Payne, Jr. Statement Ahead of President Trump's Speech to Congress

Statement

Date: Feb. 28, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) released the following statement ahead of President Donald Trump's first address to a joint session of Congress:

"One year ago, we witnessed President Obama deliver his final State of the Union--a powerful speech that laid out an ambitious yet realistic vision for this nation. I expect President Trump to fall far short of that standard.

"President Trump continues to demonstrate that he is unfit for office. And he continues to fail the American people. Instead of taking any action to create jobs or raise wages, he has tried to bar Muslims and refugees. He has prioritized destroying the Affordable Care Act. And he has allowed Russia to grip his administration, putting our national security at risk.

"Just 40 days into his presidency, President Trump is ill-tempered, ill-informed, and ill-prepared--and it shows every day. His term has already been marked by controversy and chaos, and his speech tonight will do nothing to change that."
