Brooks to Senate: Fight for the American People: Build the Wall!

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-05) today appeared on Fox News to advocate funding for the U.S.-Mexico border wall. This week, the House proposed a spending measure with $1.6 billion for construction of the border wall, but Senate Democrats have threatened to filibuster any spending bill that funds a border security wall. Brooks urged the Senate to go nuclear, thereby allowing the will of the majority of Americans to prevail and enabling Congress to fund the border wall, repeal ObamaCare, pass tax reform, and deliver on the Trump Agenda.

Congressman Mo Brooks said, "It has become quite clear that in the Senate we have ceded authority to the Democrats to control our agenda. That's not what the American people sent us to Washington, D.C. to do . . . On the House side, we have been doing our job. I think we are going to pass funding for about $1.6 billion for a border security wall, that is what President Trump wants. However, when it goes to the Senate, if past history is any guide, it is going to get stripped out. We saw something similar to that happen in April, where the Senate refused to support President Trump's border security wall, in effect denying the voters, the tens of millions of voters in the United States, who want that security on our southern border."

Brooks continued, "On the House side, we have enough Republicans saying we are going to build the wall, that it will get built. The problem is when it goes to the Senate, and they have an archaic rule, it is a filibuster rule, that empowers a minority of Democrats to thwart the will of the majority of the Republicans in the Senate, to thwart the will of the majority Republican House, to thwart the will of the President of the United States, and to thwart the will of the tens of millions of voters who sent us to Washington, D.C. to correct some of the damage done by the left-wing policies of the last decade."

Brooks concluded, "The American people are frustrated because this Republican House, Senate and White House aren't getting their job done . . . But let's narrow the focus to the United States Senate, that's where the Republicans have ceded to the Democrats the authority, to Chuck Schumer, the authority to stop us from getting the job done. For the life of me I do not understand why 52 Republicans, the majority, would give the minority the power to stop the majority. That makes no sense, particularly at this time in American history where so much is at stake. I hope the American people will rise up, put pressure on the Republicans in the Senate to quit messing around, to get rid of the rules that prevent our majority will from prevailing, so that we can have border security, we can have an infrastructure plan, we can have tax reform, go down the list."
