Rep. Meadows' Statement on Resignation of James Runcie

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) released the following statement on the resignation of James Runcie, Chief Operating Officer of the U.S. Department of Education Federal Student Aid:

"While I'm extremely disappointed that Mr. Runcie is refusing to testify before the committee, his resignation marks a new day in Washington. For years under Mr. Runcie's leadership, federal aid programs have experienced significant losses, alarming increases in improper payments, and have become less and less reliable for our students over the long term--all while Mr. Runcie received nearly $450,000 in bonuses over 6 years. The deeply rooted problems in our loan programs demand a leader who can put politics aside and make the sound decisions needed to stabilize federal aid. Today is the first step in that process. I applaud Secretary DeVos for her leadership in ensuring that our Department of Education puts the needs of students above special interests in Washington."
