Comstock Statement On Passage of the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act

Statement

Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (R-VA) released the following statement after H.R. 3364, the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act passed the House of Representatives by a bipartisan vote of 419 to 3:

"Today I voted for the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, which establishes new sanctions and enhances existing sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea, as well as entities dealing with those governments. This measure strengthens sanctions in response to Russian aggression in Ukraine and Moscow's interference in the U.S. presidential election. It also allows Congress to reject presidential efforts to waive or terminate these sanctions."

BACKGROUND:

In February 2017, Congresswoman Comstock cosponsored H.R. 1059, the Russia Sanctions Review Act. In May, 2017, she voted to support H.R. 1644, the Korean Interdiction and Modernization of Sanctions Act, which passed the House by a vote of 419-1. During her time in Congress, she has taken a number of votes and other actions to support a tougher U.S. foreign policy stance toward Iran. The Russia Sanctions Review Act, the Korean Interdiction and Modernization of Sanctions Act, and a number of other provisions from previously-considered legislation and resolutions relating to Iran were included in the package passed today, H.R. 3364, the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act.
