Putting our Veterans First

Statement

Date: March 17, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed two bills to improve the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Congressman Bill Flores (R-Texas) issued the following statement regarding passage of these bills:

"Our veterans have given much to provide for the security of our nation and our families. Their service and sacrifice should always be honored and defended. Accordingly, the House passed legislation to require improved accountability from VA employees. We also passed legislation to expand access to quality care by improving the VA's ability to recruit and retain high-quality health care providers and professionals. With passage of these bills, we are taking much-needed steps to change the culture and capabilities at the VA. I remain committed to working with my fellow House colleagues to create a 21st century VA that improves access to high-quality care and puts the care of our nation's veterans first."

The bills passed by the House include:
H.R. 1259 - The VA Accountability First Act
H.R. 1367 - To improve the authority of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to hire and retain physicians and other employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs
