Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD Receives More than $44,000 in USDA Funding

Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced that $44,646 in federal funds to the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (ISD) for their Improving Student Achievement Through Nutrition Program from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This planning grant will enable the district to partner with Farm to School, an organization that works to improve students' access to healthy, locally grown foods.

"The Rio Grande Valley is one of the fastest growing regions in the country and at the same time is home to a large agriculture industry," said Congressman Gonzalez. "I am pleased to see USDA fund this important project that helps Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD students gain access to fresh, local foods and engage with a sector that is so important to our regional economy."

The Healthy Hunger‐Free Kids Act of 2010 authorized and funded the establishment of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm to School Program. The Farm to School Program provides grants and technical assistance to eligible entities as they implement farm to school programs that improve access to local foods.
