Location: Washington, D.C.
Issues: Veterans

U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, delivered the following remarks to honor Independence Day and thank the veterans and service members who fought for our freedoms and liberties:

"July 4, 2017, the 241st birthday of the United States of America.

"Our country is having its birthday. You and I are enjoying our freedom. All of this, because of those soldiers and those volunteers and those military people who fought, risked their lives, and in some cases, died for America.

"And this July Fourth, unlike any other, we passed major legislation to benefit our veterans to see to it that the accountability to our veterans by our government is complete and veterans get the benefits they deserve for the work they did to make all of us free.

"On this Fourth of July, as the chairman of the veterans' committee of the United States Senate, as one who served in the United States military, and one who loves this country -- thanks to those veterans who made America possible and preserve its liberty today.

"God bless the United States of America and all our people."
