Today the House Judiciary Committee approved H.R. 372 - the Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act of 2017 - by voice vote.

This bill seeks to amend the dated McCarron-Ferguson antitrust health insurance exemption that Rep. Tom Garrett has been very critical of.

Specifically, the McCarron-Ferguson Act was a response to a Supreme Court decision addressing price gouging and monopolies, and allowed states the ability to regulate the industry which prevents real competition across state lines.

H.R. 372 would alter the McCarron-Ferguson Act to exempt it from the health insurance sector altogether.

In response, Rep. Garrett issued the following statement:

"This is a real solution to increase competition amongst healthcare providers and drive down prices for consumers. I applaud Chairman Goodlatte on passage of this legislation and look forward to supporting it on the House floor as we continue repairing the damage of Obamacare."

Rep. Garrett recently penned an opinion piece that garnered national media attention on this very issue and subsequently worked to include it in Senator Rand Paul's healthcare proposal two weeks ago.
