McEachin on Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

Statement

Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) issued this statement on the anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka:

"The Brown v. Board of Education decision ruled racial segregation of public schools unconstitutional. No doubt, this landmark court decision paved the way for improvements in educational quality and removed legal barriers depriving African-American children of equal opportunity. However, the harsh reality of today is that our public schools are increasingly re-segregated and far too many children do not have access to a high-quality education that will prepare them for college or a well-paying career.

"In my congressional district, we struggle with the disproportionate suspension rates of minority and special needs students. I have called on the Office for Civil Rights in the Department of Education to investigate this issue all across my district. As a state senator, I attempted to address this problem and now, at the federal level, I have formed a Special Needs Task Force to work towards solutions for our students. I am going to continue to fight for all students to have equal access to high quality education because I believe that leveling the playing field for the next generation is the most precious investment we can make in our country. "
