Cicilline Statement on Foreign Affairs Republicans Voting Down Transparency Measure

Statement

Date: Jan. 25, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) issued the following statement today after Republicans on the House Foreign Affairs Committee voted down an amendment he offered to require U.S. government employees to disclose any conflicts of interest, or prior work as an agent of a foreign government, before testifying as a witness in front of the committee:

"The amendment I offered today would have simply required government witnesses to disclose any conflicts of interests they hold, or prior employment on behalf of a foreign government, before they testify in front of the Foreign Affairs Committee. This information is critical in assessing their testimony and keeping the public informed."

"I'm disappointed that House Republicans killed this amendment on a party line vote today, and frankly I can't understand why they took this stand against enhanced transparency. Nonetheless, I'll continue pressing for openness and accountability on the part of all witnesses as we move ahead."
