Pelosi Statement on World Refugee Day

Statement

Date: June 20, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement in recognition of United Nations World Refugee Day:

"Today, we pause to reflect on the extraordinary situation facing the millions of men, women and children forced from their homes each year by conflict, violence, persecution, environmental disasters and other catastrophes. We celebrate their courage and resilience, honor those who have come to their aid and pledge to do our part to stand up to the evils that have caused them to flee.

"More people have been forcibly displaced from their homes than at any point since the second World War. From Syria to South Sudan, Cameroon to Colombia, and in countless places in between, more than 65 million people are struggling to find safety and shelter. Tragically, half of refugees are children: boys and girls who simply want to go to school and pursue a more hopeful future.

"On this day, let us honor the words of Pope Francis: "We have a duty toward our brothers and sisters who, for various reasons, have been forced to leave their homeland: a duty of justice, of civility and of solidarity.' In that spirit, Democrats will continue to push for the Trump Administration's cruel, unconstitutional and dangerous refugee and Muslim ban to be rescinded. Let us never forget our sacred and solemn responsibility to protect the lives and safeguard the dignity of our world's refugees."
