House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the 45th anniversary of the gender equity law Title IX:

"Today, as we mark the forty-fifth anniversary of Title IX, we look back on the enormous strides made to achieve equity in education for women and girls. In addition to the often-celebrated effects of Title IX on parity in athletics, the law has also opened countless opportunities for women and girls to access educational tools that lead to better careers. This has particularly been true in the fields of science and technology, economics, and politics - where women have been using their acquired skills to break glass ceilings.

"I'm proud to serve in Congress alongside women who have been trailblazers in business, government, medicine, and the military - all of whom have benefitted from the protections of Title IX. Not only women have been its beneficiaries; all Americans benefit when any among us is able to overcome barriers and achieve her or his full potential. Together, we will continue to defend Title IX and work to eliminate the remaining obstacles to equality, including lingering gender bias, disparities affecting female students of color, and the challenge of sexual assault on college campuses. We must ensure that as a nation we are not denying half our population the opportunity to contribute fully to building our common future."
