Shelby Reacts to President Trump's FY2018 Budget Request

Statement

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) today released the following statement regarding President Trump's Fiscal Year 2018 budget proposal:

"President Trump's budget request attempts to eliminate the annual deficit by slowing the growth of mandatory spending and restoring fiscal discipline. I support these efforts. His budget is a great starting point in this process, but it is important to remember that Congress will ultimately take a closer look and decide how best to reprioritize investments and put a stop to wasteful government spending.

"It is vital that we prioritize our nation's defense, particularly with the evolving threats we face today. President Trump has discussed the importance of rebuilding our military and increasing our Navy's fleet after eight years of insufficient funding. That should include our Navy's critical warfighting ships. As a senior member on the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will work to ensure that our armed forces receive the resources and equipment necessary to promote and protect our nation's interests."
