Rep. Ellison Statement on Supreme Court Ruling on North Carolina's Racist Gerrymandering

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement after the Supreme Court affirmed a lower court ruling that two of the congressional districts redrawn by Republicans after the 2010 census were unconstitutional. The Supreme Court found the boundaries of these congressional districts had been been drawn using race as a factor, disenfranchising Black voters.

"Rather than playing fair and following the law when they redrew their congressional map, Republicans in North Carolina based their districts on one guiding principle: denying Black North Carolinians the vote. Today the Supreme Court ruled these congressional districts unconstitutional, declaring that Republicans in the state gerrymandered two congressional districts, drawing the borders based on the population's race. It's not hard to see why the Supreme Court struck down these districts by simply taking a look at North Carolina's congressional map:

"While President Trump and Republicans around the country push the lie of voter fraud, they're making it harder for Black, Brown, young, and low-income Americans to vote every day. The real voting scandal is the Republican program of keeping people out of the polls -- and when voting can't be prevented, making your vote count for less than it should."
