Guthrie Responds to President's Joint Address

Statement

Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) released the following statement in response to President Donald Trump's Address to the Joint Session of Congress and to the Democratic response offered by former Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear:

"Tonight, President Trump set a bold agenda for fulfilling the promises he made throughout his campaign. As our health care system crumbles, our economy seeks to recover, and our world becomes more dangerous by the day, I am confident that President Trump's proposed economic and national security reforms can help turn our country around. We have an opportunity right now to work together and make lasting changes that will benefit future generations of Kentuckians. I look forward to working with him in Congress to carry out his agenda.

"I was disappointed to hear what former Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear had to say about Obamacare. Beshear approved the federal expansion of Medicaid in Kentucky, incurring a price tag in the hundreds of millions of dollars, and ultimately hurting the most vulnerable populations who already relied on Medicaid for health care coverage because of a new group of able bodied adults being added to the Medicaid rolls.

"Further, the Obamacare co-op collapsed in Kentucky, and in many counties there is only one insurance plan left on the Obamacare exchange. For the exchange plans that still exist, premiums have risen on average 31 percent. Across the country, four million people have lost their preferred health care plans. Obamacare has failed the American people. I am committed to working with President Trump and my colleagues in Congress to create health care reforms that provide affordable access and real choices for Kentuckians."
