Local Law Enforcement, Community Safety to Benefit From Trott Supported Legislation

Throughout Police Week, U.S. Representative Dave Trott (MI-11) doubled down on his support for our communities' police officers by supporting legislation that helps our local law enforcement officials safely and effectively do their jobs protecting and defending our communities and honors the brave men and women who lost their lives in their unwavering commitment to this duty.

"Celebrating Police Week gives us the opportunity to recognize and honor all the men and women who bravely put their lives on the line, every day, to protect us," said Rep. Trott. "I have been, and will always be, committed to ensuring police officers have everything they need to continue their great work. As they walk out of the door each and every morning, they deserve nothing less than our unwavering support, and we must ensure they know we stand with them -- 100%."

In helping ensure our law enforcement officials have the equipment they need to safely and effectively do their jobs, Rep. Trott co-sponsored the Protecting Lives Using Surplus Equipment Act of 2017 (H.R. 426), which rescinds the ban on armored defense vehicles used by law enforcement. According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, this ban leaves "communities at risk." Before the ban, these armored vehicles were used to support local law enforcement in Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties.

As our local police units combat ever-evolving 21st century threats, Rep. Trott voted in favor of the Strengthening State and Local Cyber Crime Fighting Act of 2017 (H.R. 1616), legislation which provides local law enforcement with the tools and training they need to combat cybercrime and cyberattacks.

Furthermore, in honoring the memory of the eight Michigan police officers who have fallen in the line of duty since last year, Rep. Trott supported the Honoring Hometown Heroes Act (H.R. 1892), which allows states to lower their flags to half-staff in recognition and remembrance of the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
