SHIMKUS ANNOUNCES GRANT, SUPPORTS
REAUTHORIZING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT

Washington, DC..Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-19) is pleased to
announce a $4,241,000 grant to the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority
through the STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program.

"These grant funds must award 30 percent of STOP funds to nonprofit, non-
governmental victim services programs, 25 percent to law enforcement, 25 percent
to prosecution, five percent to courts, and the remaining 15 percent is discretionary,"
Shimkus explained. "A 25 percent non-federal match is also required when the
grant funds are spent."

Shimkus is also a cosponsor of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act
of 2005 (HR 2876). Not only does this legislation continue the STOP grant program,
but it supports many other programs under these titles:
Improving Services for Victims of Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual
Assault, and Stalking
Services, Protection, and Justice for Young Victims of Violence
Strengthening America's Families by Preventing Violence in the Home
Strengthening the Healthcare System's Response to Domestic Violence, Dating
Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking
Housing Opportunities and Safety for Battered Women and Children
Providing Economic Security for Victims of Violence
Protection for Immigrant Victims of Violence
Safety for Indian Women.

"We should do all we can to protect against violence, to assist victims, and to
prosecute the aggressor," Shimkus added.
