Congressman Dan Kildee to Oppose Trumpcare

Statement

Date: March 24, 2017

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today ahead of the vote in the U.S. House of Representatives on the Republican health care bill, also known as Trumpcare:

"Over the past several weeks, I heard from thousands of my constituents that the Republican health care bill, Trumpcare, would mean higher costs and worse care for their families.

"I hear and understand their concerns. Under Trumpcare, costs will continue to rise. Michiganders and their families would pay higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs for worse care. 24 million people will lose their insurance. Trumpcare imposes a crushing "age tax' on older Americans, forcing them to pay up to five times as much for care and prescription drugs. Trumpcare steals from Medicare and guts Medicaid, including Michigan's successful Healthy Michigan program that covers over 600,000 Michiganders. And Trumpcare is a huge transfer of wealth from hardworking Americans to the rich: the 400 wealthiest Americans each get a new $7 million tax break under this legislation.

"I have always said that I will work with anyone, Democrat or Republican, to improve health care in America. But kicking millions off their current coverage, raising health care premiums for families, stealing from Medicare and taxing older Americans is irresponsible and dangerous. I oppose Trumpcare for these reasons."
