Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman Emeritus of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, made the following statement after the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere voted in favor of H.R. 1918, the Nicaraguan Investment and Conditionality Act (NICA) of 2017. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"I applaud the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee for passing this important bipartisan measure that promotes freedom, anti-corruption, the rule of law, and supports an independent judiciary system in Nicaragua. This measure sends a strong message of support to the Nicaraguan people that we share their values of freedom, justice and liberty for all and that we support their pursuit of a more open and democratic society."

NOTE: The Western Hemisphere Subcommittee approved three additional measures, including Ros-Lehtinen authored H.Res. 201, which expresses support to the Government of Argentina for its investigation into the terrorist bombing of the Embassy of Israel in Buenos Aires on March 17,1992. The remaining measures were H.Res. 336 - reaffirming a strong commitment to the United States-Mexico partnership -- and H.Res. 259, a measure that expresses concern and condemnation over the political, economic, social, and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela. Ros-Lehtinen is a cosponsor of both resolutions.
