Curbelo, Google Host Internet Safety Event for FL-26 Middle School Students

Today, Representative Carlos Curbelo and Google visited W.R. Thomas Middle School to deliver the Online Safety Roadshow, an online safety assembly developed by Google for middle school students.

Two Google employees delivered the 45-minute presentation, which focuses on five tips for staying safe and being smart online: thinking before you share, setting strong passwords, using settings, identifying online scams, and being positive online.

Curbelo opened the assembly by expressing the importance of online safety to the students.

"As the father of two young daughters, I've seen firsthand how the Internet has become a part of children's lives earlier than ever before," Curbelo said. "While online resources are vast and contribute greatly to the learning and sharing of information, we have a responsibility to recognize and prepare our children to combat the ever-present danger from those who try to take advantage of users. Programs like this give parents and our students the resources to practice safe and secure online habits."

"With students having greater access to the Internet through cell phones and other devices, it is important that they learn to use these tools responsibly," said Charlotte Smith, a Google spokesperson. "The Online Safety Roadshow teaches students how to be smart and safe online through a fun and interactive assembly."
