Frankel Statement on House Briefing by the Deputy Attorney General

Statement

Today, Congresswoman Lois Frankel (FL-21) issued the below statement following the bipartisan House briefing by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein:

"The classified briefing with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was disappointing and concerning. He refused to answer almost every single question put forward by Democratic members. He stated that he wrote his "Comey" memo after he was told that the President was going to fire FBI Director Comey. However, he refused to say whether he was asked to write the memo, or if anyone suggested what should be in it.

I asked two questions, which he deflected. First, whether he (Rosenstein) had planned to bring forward the recommendation to fire Comey to the President on his own. Second, would any investigation related to the Flynn/Turkey connection be within the scope of special prosecutor Mueller or instead Rosenstein's portfolio.

Mr. Rosenstein's performance today made it even clearer that we need an independent, outside commission to get to the bottom of the Trump-Russia connection. Along with 191 other Members, I signed onto the bipartisan discharge petition to force a vote to create this panel in order to get the truth for the American people. If the President has nothing to hide, then he and the Republicans in Congress should welcome independent investigations to remove all doubt of a cover-up."
