Statement on Reports of Chemical Weapon Attack in Syria

Statement

Date: April 4, 2017
Issues: Foreign Affairs

Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement:

"Reports of an apparent chemical weapon attack on civilians in Idlib are horrific and shocking -- at least 58 people, including eleven children, lie dead due to the brutal war crimes of the Assad regime.

"This barbaric attack comes just days after the Trump Administration's announcement that the United States will no longer prioritize a change in leadership as part of its Syria policy. I fear this strategically reckless and morally bankrupt about face for U.S. policy will serve only to embolden Iran and Russia in the region and legitimize Assad's grasp on power and the atrocities committed in his name against the Syrian people. The United States and international community must hold the Assad regime accountable."
