Shaheen, Hassan Congratulate UNH on $1.4 Million Grant For STEM Teaching Project

U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) congratulated the University of New Hampshire on receiving a $1.4 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the Culturally Responsive and Effective STEM Teaching (CREST) project. The CREST project is a collaborative effort between UNH, the Community College System of New Hampshire, and local school districts that will recruit and prepare science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) undergraduates and professionals to teach secondary level science and mathematics in high-need districts.

"We need more of our students to discover a passion for science, engineering, technology, and math, as jobs in the STEM fields are projected to be the fastest growing occupations over the next decade," said Shaheen. "We have a responsibility to prepare today's students with the skills they need to improve our nation's economic prosperity and global competiveness. This investment in the CREST project will help New Hampshire develop a homegrown, highly-skilled workforce for the future."

"Strengthening education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics is essential to equipping Granite Staters with the skills and innovative thinking needed for high-quality jobs in the 21st century economy," Senator Hassan said. "This investment in the innovative STEM partnership between UNH, the Community College System of New Hampshire, and local school districts will help create a brighter future for our young people while building the strong workforce our businesses need to grow and thrive."
