Since its founding, the United States has served as a country of refuge for the persecuted, abused, and oppressed. I am determined to ensure that our nation can continue to serve as a safe haven for those across the world fleeing from evil. In order to remain a safe harbor for those in need, we must strengthen our immigration admissions processes to ensure terrorists and those seeking to harm our citizens are not granted entry into the United States. President Trump's executive order on immigration is a first step in doing this.
The threat environment facing the U.S. is unprecedented, and we must adapt our immigration admission policies to counter the threat of ISIS and other terrorist groups. It is our duty to take all necessary precautions to keep our citizens safe.
President Trump's executive order is not perfect, but it is a necessary first step in protecting the homeland. I am encouraged to see interagency cooperation in facilitating entry to the most persecuted minorities, as well as those who have served with our military men and women throughout the Middle East. I will continue to monitor the roll out of this executive order and am confident that the United States will have safer, more secure borders following complete implementation.
