Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) released the following statement responding to the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to oversee the investigation of Russian government efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election and related matters:

"I support Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein's appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to lead the investigation into Russia's alleged collusion and interference with the 2016 presidential election. While this is significant step towards restoring the trust and confidence back into the United States justice system, the next and most important step will be for Congress to establish a non-partisan commission that is completely independent of the administration."
