Quigley Statement on Trump's Supreme Court Nominee

Statement

Date: Feb. 1, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), released the following statement on President Trump's nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to serve on the Supreme Court:

"The U.S. Supreme Court is our nation's highest court, a pillar of our democracy that cannot function efficiently or effectively at any less than full strength. Unfortunately, Senate Republicans allowed one seat on the bench to stay open for almost a year, choosing to play partisan political games rather than conduct a fair hearing process and hold a vote on the Senate floor. It remains to be seen if my Republican colleagues in the Senate will hold Judge Neil Gorsuch to the same level of scrutiny as they did President Obama's nominee, Judge Merrick Garland, an independent voice who enjoyed broad support and respect from both parties

"Unfortunately, President Trump ignored an opportunity to repair the division and damage caused in just the first two weeks of his administration. Instead, of choosing a moderate judge to fill the vacancy, he chose Judge Gorsuch, whose past rulings are in stark contrast with where the majority of Americans stand on the issues facing our nation. His deeply conservative, radical views have grave potential to roll back progress and divide our country even further. Instead of promoting opportunity and liberty for all, he has sided with big corporations over working people and stripped contraceptive care from women who have the constitutional right to make their own health and family planning decisions.

"I urge the Senate to hold strong and vigorous hearings on the nomination of Judge Gorsuch to ensure the Court remains an institution where justice is served. We must hold Judge Gorusch accountable to his legal record, which in too many instances, has failed hardworking Americans across the country."
