News: Rep. Murphy Issues Statement on TPS Extension for Haitians

U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., issued the following statement on today's decision by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to extend, for six months, Haiti's Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation:

"Extending temporary protected status for Haitian nationals living in the United States is the right decision, both morally and economically," said Rep. Murphy. "This decision will enable tens of thousands of Haitians--including many living and working in central Florida--to remain in the United States while Haiti is still enduring a humanitarian crisis. I stand with my Haitian constituents and support U.S. efforts to rebuild and reconstruct Haiti."

Rep. Murphy recently sent a letter to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, John Kelly, urging him to renew Haiti's TPS designation. In her letter, she noted that approximately 50,000 Haitian nationals could be compelled to returned to unsafe conditions in their home country if TPS were not extended.
