Hoyer Statement on Chairman Nunes' Meeting with President Trump

Statement

Date: March 22, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on comments made by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes to the press after meeting with President Trump:

"Today's actions and statements were inconsistent with Chairman Nunes's obligations to the Intelligence Committee, to the House of Representatives, and, by extension, to the American people. While I want to gather more of the facts before making a further determination of what action ought to be taken, at the very least this raises questions about his impartiality and ability to lead an investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian officials and to what extent. I continue to believe that a bipartisan, independent commission -- similar to the 9/11 Commission -- with subpoena powers is the appropriate way to proceed. Chairman Nunes's actions today confirm that belief. I agree with Ranking Member Schiff that nothing disclosed today in any way suggests that President Trump was the subject of a wiretap by President Obama."
