Hoyer Statement on Possible Markup of ACA Repeal Legislation Next Week

Statement

Date: March 1, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement following reports that Republicans will be holding markups of a bill repealing the Affordable Care Act next week:

"Reports that House Republicans are planning to hold a markup of their legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act next week, if true, demonstrate that they are not listening to their constituents at home. Across the country, we have seen Americans speaking out against repealing the Affordable Care Act and sharing compelling stories about how this law has benefited them and their families. They have made it clear that they do not support Republican plans to take health care coverage away from millions of Americans, cause prices to skyrocket for millions more, and once again allow discrimination based on gender and pre-existing conditions. Americans also understand that Republicans are completely in control of our health care system, and will hold them responsible for what happens to their health care.

"It's also deeply concerning that this markup will take place without any prior hearings, no cost analysis from the Congressional Budget Office, and no bill text available for the public or Members to read. Given the deep disagreements among Republicans on how to replace the Affordable Care Act, which has destabilizing our health insurance markets, the American people deserve to know the details of any plan being proposed and see a thorough debate of that plan. Democrats will strongly oppose any efforts to ram an opaque repeal of the Affordable Care Act through Congress."
