U.S. Rep. Boren Statement on the President's Proposed Budget
Monday, February 7, 2005

WASHINGTON D.C - U.S. Representative Dan Boren issued the following statement Monday regarding the Administration's FY 2006 Budget Request:

"I admire the President's courage in attempting to cut the deficit in half by the year 2009, but I am concerned about the impact that this budget will have on rural communities, education, and economic development."

"It is important that we move towards fiscal accountability in the budget, but we must carefully weigh the consequences of leaving local and state governments footing the bill for important initiatives that Oklahomans depend upon. As a former member of the state legislature, I oppose unfunded mandates that can be crippling to our state's economy."

"I applaud the Administration's increases for community health care centers which play a pivotal role in providing quality care to many Oklahomans. However, other areas of the budget could lead to cuts in education and rural economic development programs that help keep Oklahoma's communities sustainable."

"I welcome the Administration's proposed increase over last year's level for defense, but I'm troubled that it does not include funding for the promised increase in death benefits for the families of servicemen and women who are killed in action. I plan to work closely with the President to get this funding included."

"I look forward to working with Members of both parties to develop a responsible budget worthy of the trust of Oklahomans, the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, and the aspirations of our children."
