Today, Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) released the following statement regarding the ongoing crisis in Aleppo, Syria.

"In light of these atrocities, I believe that we cannot continue to sit idly by," Polis said. "Over the last five years, we have seen the devastating cost of inaction, and as Americans, we have a responsibility to lead. I call on President Obama to use all channels at his disposal to negotiate a cessation of hostilities in East Aleppo with the Russian, Iranian, and Syrian governments and consider emergency airlifts and the creation of safe zones. Deescalating the conflict will provide immediate relief for the civilians who are trapped, and allow for their evacuation to North Aleppo -- an important step towards fragile safety. It is incumbent upon the international community to demonstrate our capacity for decency and dignity. With history as our guide, we must act to prevent atrocities. We must stand with Aleppo and do everything in our power to protect and secure the fundamental human rights of the Syrian people."

The escalating threat to civilian lives in Aleppo, Syria is an immense and imminent human rights disaster. At least 50,000 civilians are still trapped in their homes, besieged by heavy bombardments. Eastern Aleppo is being specifically targeted for violence by government forces. Reports of murder, violence, and retaliation against insurgents and innocent civilians are widespread.
