Brady Stands Up for U.S. Agriculture in WTO Enforcement Action Against China

Statement

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) issued the following statement regarding today's announcement that the United States is bringing a World Trade Organization (WTO) enforcement action against China for breaching its tariff-rate quota (TRQ) commitments for rice, wheat, and corn. This enforcement action is the companion case to the WTO challenge the United States launched against China in September 2016 regarding China's domestic support measures on these agricultural commodities.

"Today's announcement is a huge step forward for American farmers, agriculture businesses, and workers as China unfairly denies American farmers the opportunity to sell their products into the Chinese market. The nontransparent and intentionally unpredictable management of China's commitments is unfair trade that hurts hardworking American farmers. Strong enforcement of our trade agreements--including the WTO--ensures that our farmers, businesses, and workers are treated fairly. When our trading partners play by the rules, Americans win all over the world. I welcome this action today and look forward to working with the next Administration as we step up our actions to hold China accountable."
