Rep. Cárdenas: "We Do Not Rob Our Seniors and Disabled Communities of their Dignity"

Statement

Today, Congressman Tony Cárdenas (D-San Fernando Valley), together with House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Representatives Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Ted Deutch (D-FL), and Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT), held a press conference with seniors and activists who delivered more than one million petition signatures demanding that Republicans in Washington, DC and across the country keep their hands off American's hard-earned Medicare.

"I genuinely hate when people go hungry, when people don't have a place to live, and when people get cheated out of things that they've earned," said Congressman Cárdenas. "Some of these seniors have health issues after a lifetime of backbreaking work. Medicare is something that's there because you've worked hard for it and earned it. It's the same thing over and over -- Republicans snuggle up to seniors during campaign season. And now that we're back in Congress, they want to gut Medicare and end Social Security.

"I thank the people that signed these petitions and brought them to Washington. The work is not done, here in Congress and all across America. This is about dignity, and about the people we love. We will fight together. This is the United States of America. We do not rob our seniors and disabled communities of their dignity."

Earlier this year, Congressman Cárdenas joined 91 House Democrats in sending a letter to Speaker Paul Ryan urging him to reject proposals to the budget deal that would harm Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.
