MARTINEZ: PRAISE FOR AMERICA'S RETURN TO FLIGHT

Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) today applauded the launch of space shuttle Discovery and made the following statement:

"This is a great day for the space program and proud moment for our nation. The launch itself was spectacular and clear evidence of our country's unquenchable thirst for knowledge and exploration. I commend the crew of Discovery and the people of NASA who made this return to flight possible.

Senator Martinez was originally scheduled to attend the launch in person but returned to Washington to oppose efforts to open the Eastern Gulf of Mexico to oil and natural gas exploration. The senator watched the launch on television in his office.
