Curbelo Rejects White House's Abstention in Supporting Libertad Act

Statement

Today, the White House abstained from a Castro-sponsored U.N. resolution to condemn the Cuban Liberty and Democratic Solidarity (Libertad) Act, which became law in 1996 and continues the United States' embargo against Cuba. Rep. Carlos Curbelo (FL-26) released the following statement:

"I am deeply disappointed in the White House's abstention at the United Nations. The Administration's refusal to defend our country's laws is unacceptable. These sanctions cut off resources to the anti-American Castro dictatorship and protect the legal rights of American citizens that had their private properties confiscated. The Cuban dictatorship, despite the President's outreach, continues to undermine American national security interests. The United Nations' time would be better spent focusing on the deplorable human rights record of the Cuban dictatorship, affirming the UN's own Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and helping the Cuban people free themselves from the clutches of tyranny."
