It was quite the busy Monday for United States Congressman Jeff Fortenberry.

Fortenberry, representative of Nebraska's First Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, has been spending some time away from Washington, D.C., prior to the Nov. 8 election -- which he is up for re-election in -- to spend some time with his district's constituency.

Monday morning, Fortenberry spent time near Schuyler celebrating the groundbreaking ceremony of the project that will turn U.S. Highway 30 into a four-lane from Columbus to Fremont.

"This is a project that has been in the works for 20 years," Fortenberry said during a Tuesday interview. "So you had former state senators there, you had myself, Senator (Deb) Fischer, Lt. Governor (Mike) Foley, chambers of commerce and local leaders. And what I told them is that they are looking at is a real team. It's a team of people who have continuity, working together at all levels of government to get something done. And frankly, I think that is something this country is crying for."

Following his stop in Columbus, Fortenberry spoke with a group of students at Smeal Manufacturing Co. in Snyder in commemoration of National Manufacturing Day.

Then he made time for a pit-stop in Fremont, where he addressed several classes of juniors and seniors inside of the Nell McPherson Theater about the role of government, its overall importance and how elected officials attempt to do what is best for their constituency.

Fortenberry is well-versed in the ways of the local, state and federal government. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee, which is responsible for the expenditures of the U.S. Government.
