Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) issued the following statement on the announcement from Secretary of Defense Ash Carter that he is ordering the Department of Defense to suspend efforts to collect the repayment of enlistment bonuses paid to California National Guard soldiers:

"Our dedicated service members should not bear the burden of mistakes that are of no fault of their own. I'm pleased that Secretary Carter has ordered the Pentagon to suspend any efforts to collect repayments from California's National Guard.

"Now, we must join together and do everything we can in Congress to ensure that those honorable National Guard members who have already paid back enlistment bonuses in good faith are made whole. These men and women have served and sacrificed on behalf of our country, and I will continue standing with my colleagues to demand they receive the justice they deserve."
