McKinley Holds Agriculture Tour

Congressman David B. McKinley, P.E., (WV-1) made several stops throughout the First District to meet farmers and discuss many of the issues they currently face. The agriculture tour was organized by the Farm Credit of the Virginias and included stops at Henderson's Farms in Littleton which raises cattle, lambs, and ewes, Cunningham Farm in St. Mary's which raises cattle, and Howell's Gristmill outside of New Martinsville. Congressman McKinley was joined at each stop by officials from the West Virginia Farm Bureau and the Farm Credit of the Virginias.

"Farmers and small business owners in the agriculture industry play an important role in keeping our economy strong while also maintaining our local heritage. At each of the stops I listened to the challenges they face, from overregulation to the lack of reliable internet and phone service, and poor roads," said McKinley.

"This tour gave me an opportunity to meet directly with farmers and their workers, view their operations, talk about the importance of agriculture education, and discuss how we can keep the industry vibrant throughout our state. These are hardworking people just trying to provide for their families and communities, and they deserve to be heard," McKinley said.

"By listening to their concerns we can be more effective advocating for them in Washington. Going forward, we must continue to preserve our agricultural heritage through programs like the Future Farmers of America (FFA) program and the Agricultural Extension Program so that future generations can keep this industry strong," said McKinley.

This is the second agriculture tour led by Congressman McKinley. In May 2014, he toured in several farms in Mineral, Grant, and Hardy counties. Congressman McKinley has been recognized as a "Friend of the Farm Bureau" for his support of issues important to farmers and ranchers.
