Pompeo Demands Pentagon Put Soldiers over Bureaucracy

Statement

Date: Oct. 25, 2016
Location: Wichita, KS

Congressman Mike Pompeo (R-KS) issued a statement regarding reports that National Guard troops in California were required to repay bonuses they were paid upwards of ten years ago.

Pompeo said, "As a former solider, I understand the sacrifices we ask of our men and women in uniform. As a nation, we have a responsibility to support our troops, on and off the battlefield. It is unacceptable for bureaucracies and poor planning to get in the way of promises made to them. That is why the House of Representatives acted months ago to fix this problem, and I demand that the Pentagon suspend its efforts to recoup bonuses from these soldiers."

Congressman Pompeo also signed on to a letter to Secretary of Defense Ash Carter with several other members of Congress on this issue. The letter asks for an immediate halt to efforts to recoup bonuses and requests a waiver for the bonus recoupment.
