Just Days Before Release of Trump Tapes, Senator Burr: "One Can Misinterpret the Point He's Trying to Make"

Just days before the tapes of Donald Trump admitting to sexually assaulting women were released, Senator Richard Burr offered this excuse for the other controversies his choice for president had caused: "One can misinterpret the point he's trying to make."

The comments were reported in a new story published this week and noted that they followed Trump's "tawdry remarks toward women, or calling Mexican migrants rapists and criminals, or issuing, retracting, then repeating a ban on Muslim immigrants, or implying that blacks are waging a war on police."

Even in the wake of the vile recordings, Senator Burr only offered this response when asked at the debate if what Trump admitted to was sexual assault: "If in fact he did it, that would be sexual assault. I take him at his word: He said he didn't do it."

"Senator Burr is not just defending Donald Trump, he's suggesting voters across North Carolina aren't getting "his point,'" said Helen Hare, Senior Communications advisor for Deborah Ross for Senate. "Senator Burr should tell voters if he still thinks the problem is that people "misinterpret' Trump and not what Trump himself is saying and doing. It's just wrong, and shows how far Senator Burr is willing to go to put his own political interests ahead of North Carolina."
