Ross Votes for Zika Funding in CR

Statement

U.S. Rep. Dennis A. Ross (R-FL-15), Senior Deputy Majority Whip, made the following statement today after voting to pass a continuing resolution budget that includes $1.1 billion in anti-Zika-funding:

"I am very pleased that the House and Senate finally united and passed this essential funding that will help combat and prevent the spread of the deadly Zika virus. This issue hits home and is close to my heart, as Florida alone has confirmed nearly 1,000 cases of Zika. The Tampa Bay region has more than 80 travel-related cases, and the backyard of my very own district has confirmed locally transmitted cases. These numbers are increasing daily, and it is about time we did something to eradicate this life-threatening virus.

"The legislation passed today includes funding for mosquito control, response and readiness, vaccines and diagnostic test research, and healthcare support for mothers, children and others experiencing complications in areas with the highest rates of transmission, like Florida. These funds will also be subject to Hyde Amendment restrictions, which bar the use of taxpayer dollars for abortion services.

"I have supported anti-Zika funding for several months now, including the president's original request for $1.9 billion in funding, as well as made numerous calls to my fellow members and Leadership to immediately move on this serious issue. I am happy to see politics finally being put aside so we can help those desperately in need and address the national health epidemic we have on our hands."
